Newsletter – Fall 2023

Welcome to LYNC’s first quarterly newsletter!  We are so glad you are here to support us, to take an interest in your community and most importantly, to love your neighbour!

Featured Article: Is Equitable Housing Really Equitable?

One of the underpinnings of LYNC’s approach to housing is our concept of “equitable” housing. You may wonder why we use this term as opposed to “affordable” housing. While affordable housing is based on a simple government calculation of financial need, equitable housing is so much more. Equitable housing is a wholistic approach to housing that incorporates values of inclusion, dignity, intergenerational community and equal opportunity. Have a look at our video which explains our heart and vision for the Mill Block Community  https://youtu.be/kq0tyUomjfo

But is equitable housing truly “equitable”? Is it good for the community? Read our blog for some insight into this question https://lyncommunities.com/is-equitable-housing-truly-equitable/

Update from LYNC’s Board of Directors

Welcome to our first newsletter! For us, it’s been a busy summer of community events. We participated in cruise night, church community events and soon we’ll be at the Fall Fair. We have enjoyed meeting many generous and supportive neighbours.

We are still in our pre-construction phase but have achieved many things over the summer here are the highlights:

  •  Our drawings are complete and the Site Plan is near completion with one final detail to work out with GRCA before submitting to the Township for approval.
  • We participated in the Enbridge Savings by Design full-day workshop where we had one-on-one access to experts in green building design and construction. We will soon be receiving a set of recommendations and financial incentives to make sure the Mill Block saves energy, is more comfortable and minimizes environmental impact.
  • SHS Consultants and Invizij Architects are continuing to work on building our professional team through the tendering process in preparation for active construction.
  • We have started to plan and do some preliminary work in our community garden plot. More details will be coming regarding a generous donor who will be allowing the use of  a parcel of land for our garden – stay tuned.

All in all it has been a summer for planning, praying, patience (everything takes so much longer than we think!) and participating! We look forward to the next phase in our journey.

Senior Spotlight

Did you know that LYNC is dedicated to building intergenerational community?  Research shows that intergenerational programing builds self-esteem, improves cognitive function and promotes feelings of well-being for older and younger participants. Allowing different generations to come together can help them learn together, form friendships and make communities stronger. Read more
